Purpose & Scope
This analysis aims to provide an overview of how human game entertainment history changes from time to time. While game entertainment is always accompanied by humans, we are curious how the format of games differs and transforms. In another word, we are figuring out lists of game examples both on the digital and physical sides. Towards the end of our research, we hope to foresee how game development reflects the changes in our style of living.
The project is divided into two main sections and its relative two subsections:
- PHYSICAL - boardgames and group games;
- DIGITAL: video and mobile games.
Definitions
   Game Entertainment
Game entertainment refers to a form of live and mass media entertainment. To better illustrate how game entertainment changed and evolved from the 1900s to the present, it is further separated into four categories in the two genres - physical and digital. This helps to show different perspectives on evolution. Whereas the origins of physical games can no longer be tracked down as it comes along with human history, the earliest instance of digital games is from 1947. "Cathode ray tube amusement device" introduced the beginning of video games. Since then, games under technological advancement have become more popular. As there are too many game examples, this project highlights the significant choices.
   Physical Games
The physical game means games that are played by using the body and might require strength and some physical actions from the players. Players have to really take some actions and do some things to participate in the game. The research is going to focus on two types of physical games which are board games and group games. Board Games are tabletop games that involve the movement of pieces or other objects around the board. It often includes elements of cards, game boards, and tables. Examples of board games are checkers, Monopoly. Group games are usually played in social gatherings to provide entertainment and interaction for a group of people. There are several categories, such as icebreaker games, parlor games, and picnic games.
   Digital Games
The digital game refers to a game that can be played on electronic devices, for example, computers and smartphones. The research is going to focus on two types of digital games which are video games and mobile games. Video games are electronic games usually played with a screen (It can be a computer screen or television. ) It is interactive software that is used for simulation and entertainment with visions and sounds. Mobile games are a minor category of video games. It is typically played on smartphones. Mobile games and video games both have different genres of games which can fulfill different gamers' preferences.
